Fourteen shortstops in contention for Wallace Award
High batting averages, stellar fielding percentages among candidates

LUBBOCK, Texas -- From remarkably high batting averages to stellar fielding percentages, the 14 players on the newest watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award have made their marks on the season.

The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.

"These guys have put up great numbers all season," said Darby Brown, Wallace Award co-chair. "We have followed them closely all season and the consistency they play with is impressive."

Troy's Tyler Vaughn and Oregon's J.J. Altobelli lead the pack in fielding percentage at .979, while LSU's Alex Bregman continues to lead the list with his .403 batting average.

Hunter Dozier, a junior at Stephen F. Austin, has 16 home runs on the season, by far the highest on the watch list.

"When you stop to think about how many chances these guys have in the field, to have a fielding percentage that high after 50-plus games is remarkable," said Tyler Young, award co-chair. "And Hunter Dozier's home-run total is huge in the era of the BBCOR bats."

Several conferences have multiple representatives on the newest watch list, including the SEC with three. The ACC, Pac-12 and Southern conferences all feature two players on the list.
