2019 Olerud Award semifinalists released
Candidates must have at least 20 innings pitched or six saves

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Small schools and national powers. Sluggers and power arms. Players of all types are represented on the 2019 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year list of semifinalists.

The award is named for the former Washington State University standout who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s and was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. The award will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this summer.

"Every year we've done this award, the quality of candidates just seems to get deeper and deeper, and this year is no different," award chairman George Watson said. "We've got dominating starters, shutdown closers and every single one of these guys is putting up great numbers at the plate. Each player is having a tremendous effect on their respective teams' push for the postseason."

The resurgence of the Georgia Tech program has been paced by infielder/right-handed pitcher Tristin English. The junior is hitting .321 with 15 home runs and 56 RBI, and on the mound is 2-0 with five saves.

But he's not alone. Just up the East Coast, East Carolina slugger and left-handed pitcher Alec Burleson has the Pirates vying for a top eight national seed. The sophomore is 5-1 with a 3.30 ERA and four saves, striking out 48 in 43 2/3 innings, while hitting. 373 with six home runs and 45 RBI.

Stanford is in a battle with UCLA for the top spot, not only in the Pac-12 but in the country as well, thanks to junior Will Matthiessen, who is hitting .327 with nine home runs and 41 RBI. On the mound, the right-hander is 5-2 with 45 strikeouts in 42 innings.

Chris Wright, a junior from Bryant, leads the list of semifinalists with 12 saves, striking out 52 in 28.1 innings, while Georgia junior Aaron Schunk has 11 saves and a 2.53 ERA.
