Pitcher of the Year semifinalists announced

LUBBOCK, Texas -- As the regionals begin, the list of candidates for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, has been narrowed to 18 semifinalists.

The award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock as part of the Hall of Fame's annual Night of Champions event.

Kent State's Eric Lauer leads the list of semifinalists, and the country, with a miniscule 0.69 earned-run average in 104 innings pitched. He is also tied for the lead in strikeouts with 125.

Kevin Hill, a senior at South Alabama, also has 125 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings. He has four complete games on the season and a 2.53 ERA.

Kade McClure, a standout sophomore at Louisville, leads the country in victories with 12. He also has a 2.54 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched.

Louisville has three representatives on the list in McClure, Brendan McKay -- who also is a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year -- and Drew Harrington. McKay is 11-3 on the season with a 2.25 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 96 innings. Harrington is 11-2 with a 2.24 ERA.

"To be at the point of cutting down to semifinalists and still have three pitchers from one school speaks to the depth of that staff and the strength of the stats those young men have put up all season," said Chris Snead, Pitcher of the Year Award co-chair.

Florida is the only other school with more than one representative, with Logan Shore and Shaun Anderson making the semifinalist list.

Two freshmen are among the semifinalists -- TCU's Dalton Horton and Texas Tech's Davis Martin. Horton is 8-0 on the season with a 2.58 ERA. Martin also is 8-0 with a 2.41 ERA.

"These two freshmen put up very competitive numbers in their first seasons at the collegiate level," said Raymond Richardson, Pitcher of the Year Award co-chair. "There are so many impressive pitchers on this list that it's going to be incredibly difficult to pick finalists and an eventual winner."
